Granite Construction
Challenge
Granite Construction is one of the largest builders of roads, dams, bridges and other infrastructure-related projects in the United States. Granite employs over 4,000 people nationwide—a large percentage of whom are located in local branches or remote job sites.
Early on, Granite’s executive staff saw the Web as an opportunity to connect staff in widespread locations, disseminate business information, and increase sharing and collaboration of project knowledge and skills. With strong management support, Granite’s internal Web team built a feature-rich, static HTML site. However, the size and success of the Intranet site was making it difficult for Granite's small Web team to manage. They wanted to add applications and distribute content management throughout the organization.
Solution
The Igneous Group helped Granite produce a site plan that identified new and existing site features and an information architecture that organized these features for ease of use. From these documents, The Igneous Group engineering team built the navigation structure and page templates, and custom-engineered features such as bids scheduling and results display. The Granite team converted existing pages to the new templates and added additional features. Other features, such as context-sensitive Help and site administration, were included as part of The Igneous Group’s standard application framework (a precursor to the IGXEC platform). IGTeam, the Igneous Group’s team directory product, was integrated with Granite’s J.D. Edwards human resources database.
Results
Through close collaboration with the Granite team, The Igneous Group produced a site that satisfies Granite’s current needs and gives Granite a solid platform for expansion.
